The Hockey NL Under 20, 15 and 12 Steele Hotel Female Provincial Championships recently took place, with pleasing results.

The event was held from March 23 to 25 in 10 locations with a total of 68 teams competing.

Clarenville, Marystown and Gander will play host to the Under 12 tournaments which will feature a total of 23 teams.  Stephenville, Bonavista, Grand Falls-Windsor and Cee Bees will host a total of 25 teams in the Under 15 age categories. The Under 20 tournaments will be hosted in Gros Morne, Conception Bay Regional and St. Anthony with a total of 20 teams in the senior age category.

Lake Melville Xtreme, representing Happy Valley-Goose Bay, were competing in the Under 12 Mega Tournament at Gander and the Under 15 C Tournament at Grand Falls Windsor.

The Under 12s tournament comprised of 12 teams, one of the largest groupings across the different provincial age tournament that took place during the event.

After playing in their five round robin matches, the girls finished the tournament in 11th place, but managed to have a 1-1 draw with the Corner Brook Royals who were the eventual bronze medal winners. The Lake Melville Xtreme Under 12s finished the tournament with one win, one draw and three losses.

The fortunes for the Under 15 team took a different turn with the girls bringing home the silver medal. Six teams competed in the U15 tournament, two of which were from main land Labrador.

After the completion of the round robin games, the team finished top of the standings with four wins, one draw and no losses.

They entered the gold medal match playing against the Churchill Falls Thunderbirds, the team they had beaten in the round robin games by three goals to two.

With little separating the two teams, Churchill Falls scored the only goal of the match to win 1-0 and take home the gold medal.

The Labrador teams can hold their heads high, bringing back the gold and silver medals back to the main land!
