Stan's Stance: Man, I wish I had a Column

For an amateur writer, having a column in the local paper is something I always wanted to do. Of course, this is before the interest in the social media mayhem, because as they say “if it’s on Face-book, it’s got to be true”. Folks, I’m here to tell you that wishes do come true! Starting this week, I will be writing a bi-weekly column for this paper. My column will have a very broad range, which will include topics on anything and everything to do with local Labrador politics, social, environment, business and sports. Although to be honest with you and to disclose the truth, my knowledge of actual hockey stats revolves around the Toronto Maple Leafs and the World Wresting Inc. But that’s OK, other people with the paper can do a much better job then I in covering sports.

My name may ring a bell to some of you, as I previously wrote a column a few years back and have been involved in public life here in Labrador for some time. However, if I could have your indulgence for just a brief moment, I would like to take this opportunity to re-introduce myself.

Hi, I am Stan Oliver. You might remember me as being involved with the Town Council of Happy Valley-Goose Bay (where I held the elected position of Deputy Mayor) and the Combined Councils of Labrador. I was honoured to be involved in Labrador politics and policy for over 15 years, and hope my contribution had some positive results. However, the jury is still out on that one people. We covered a tremendous amount of ground in that time and seen a lot of changes. Resource development has allowed our community of Happy Valley-Goose Bay to see the construction of a new hospital, new high school, a new Arts Center (Lawrence Obrien Centre), extended College, new airport and of course a much-needed paved highway through-out some of Labrador. There is much work to be done regarding other needs (such as a wellness centre and youth center), but hey “that another topic for another day”.

The reason you may not have seen me in recent years, is because, I switched gears and was working for a private business operated in the beautiful community of North West River (CRB Automotive). It was a positively wonderful experience that allowed me the opportunity to learn much about running a business and the automobile repair world. Although, it was a gratifying experience, I missed writing. That’s what makes this present-day prospect to returning to our local paper as very happy day!

But hey, that’s enough about yours truly. I am really counting on you (the readers) to help me keep this column interactive and interesting. Hopefully, full of ideas, social trends and the day-to-day happenings of stimulating things in Labrador. Let me know what topics you want to see more of (or less) of in my column, and what you think of anything I write. Good or bad, negative or positive, I will try to keep it all in perspective. Through my past public activities, I have grown accustomed to criticism and take it all with a grain of salt. Thanks for reading my column and if you have ideas and or comments please feel free to e-mail directly at

Cheers from Central Labrador
