They chose their first author, Samantha Jacque, in January and now they’re looking for an illustrator.
Ossie Michelin, Knowledge Mobilization coordinator for the partnership, said there are no children’s books out there written by Labrador Inuit in the dialect of the Labrador Inuit and this project is looking to change that.
“It’s really a project by Inuit for Inuit,” he said. “We saw this was a gap and we need to change that. If someone wants to apply they don’t need to have experience as an illustrator, we just want a good artist. It’s a great opportunity.”
The story they chose is called ‘The Christmas Drop’ and is about Jacque’s Aunt Nellie Winters' memory of one Christmas in Nutak.
In the story, the young girl, after finishing her chores, gets her best friend and they go outside to wait for the plane to arrive. Before long someone is yelling, they can see the plane and the whole village is out. The plane flies overhead and drops the first parachute but the wind carries it far away, so the men from the village chase it on dog team.
The next parachute comes much closer and when the packages hit the ground, the two girls are so close that are splattered with juice when some of the packages bust open, which Jacque said actually happened to her Aunt Nellie and friend. All the packages are taken to the church to be sorted out and at the Christmas Eve service, the children receive their toys.
Jacque is an unknown writer and Michelin said they hope to give the same opportunity for an illustrator.
“It's a great opportunity for an unknown artist and it's a learning experience for all of us because we want to make more of these books,” he said. “This is also us learning how this all works and how to make it happen. So after we publish a few books will be able to give an opportunity to a number of artists to be able to have a chance to try writing or illustrating books.”
To apply an illustrator must be a Nunatsiavut beneficiary and have the application in by Feb. 28. For more information contact Jodie Lane at 709-923-2360 or email Jodie.email@example.com
