Labrador man charged with sexual assault, forcible confinement

HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, N.L. – A 63-year-old Happy Valley-Goose Bay man has been charged after a police investigation into a sexual assault.

According to an RCMP news release Wednesday, a female youth reported she had been sexually assaulted on the evening of June 2.

The youth was approached by a vehicle, believed to be a taxicab, near the RBC bank branch on Grenfell Street in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

She was offered a ride by the male driver and was allegedly taken to a home where she was then sexually assaulted. She then left and reported the incident to the RCMP. 

The police news release did not identify the man. It did, however, state the charges against him as sexual assault, sexual interference, uttering threats and forcible confinement. It also noted he is set to appear in Happy Valley Goose Bay Provincial Court on Aug. 2. 

The court docket for that day affirms Joseph Patrick Cooney is scheduled to make an election and/or plea on those same charges.
