Former government communications director gets 90 days for sexual assault

HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, N.L. —

A Happy Valley Goose Bay man was given 90 days house arrest for sexual assault on April 11.

Val Oliver, 51, pleaded guilty to the single charge the day before in Happy Valley-Goose Bay Provincial Court.

Oliver was previously a communications director for the Department of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs and is well known in the community through his former photography business and as a former Santa Claus in the annual Christmas Parade.

The name and identity of his victim are protected by a publication ban.

Oliver is allowed to leave his home for two hours a day while under house arrest and once it ends he will be on probation for 12 months. He also now has to register as a sex offender for 10 years and was ordered to supply a DNA sample to the RCMP.

He is scheduled return to court on a child pornography charge on May 21.
