October 23 marked the beginning of construction of the new Military Family Resource Centre at CFB Goose Bay.
A ground-breaking ceremony took place in front of the new building located at building 564 on Rivers Rd. According to a release from the Canadian Forces, this project reinforces the Royal Canadian Air Force’s (RCAF) commitment to the “mission first, people always” mind set.
“As the commander of 5 Wing Goose Bay I am excited and proud to be breaking ground for the new Goose Bay Military Family Resource Centre,” said Lieutenant Colonel Andre Wedgwood, Commander 5 Wing Goose Bay. “Mission first, people always, is a philosophy followed in the Royal Canadian Air Force. With this new facility 5 Wing families will continue to be well taken care of by the excellent staff of the GBMFRC in great new surroundings.”
The project will include the construction of an addition to the current building, renovations of the basement for storage, and renovation of the first floor where a daycare will operate. On the second floor will be offices and a conference room and the facility will include all new windows and doors, installation of a new sprinkler system, elevator and air handling units.
In addition, there will be a fenced in area with a playground for the daycare and a new parking area will also be included for staff and those attending events.
“Our Military Family Resource Centre has been in its current location for the past 26 years and now we are going to be getting a new home!” said Joan Harvey, Executive Director, Goose Bay Military Family Resource Centre. “This is going to be awesome for our 5 Wing Community. We will have all our programs and services in one location which will enable us to enhance our services. This will be so much more convenient for our 5 Wing families.”
The project was awarded to Churchill Construction Limited of Goose Bay, through Defence Contracting Canada. The project budget is $3.19 million dollars and construction is expected to be completed May 18, 2018.
