The Channel-Port aux Basques Volunteer Fire Department battled a house fire for the better part of six hours on MacDonald Drive on Saturday, Feb. 24.
The fire started after 9:30 a.m.
Jerome Battiste, one of witnesses, was at his sister’s house nearby and spotted the flames shooting up around 9:45 a.m. When he arrived at the burning house, he says he could hear the sound of the sirens on the way.
The occupants escaped without injury, but a teenage neighbour was later treated for possible smoke inhalation by paramedics. Firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to nearby houses but were hampered a bit at times as they moved around.
