The event was last held in 2013 and represented the first time the Loppet had been held at the club trails. Loppet goers and spectators enjoyed brilliant sunny skies and cool temperatures.
The Big Land Loppet organizing committee congratulates all participants and thanks the skiers and snowshoers for supporting the Loppet.
“Our goal was to plan a community event that emphasized fun and participation,” said Sara McCarthy, a spokesperson for the committee. “We saw some individuals pushing themselves, while others took their time and enjoyed the company of their friends, fellow participants, and the natural beauty of the trails around them.”
The event featured six categories, including distances of 23.5 km, 14 km, 9.5 km and 5 km in the cross country ski races, a 5 km snowshoe race, and a participation ski for children enrolled in the Jackrabbit program and others. Gold, silver and bronze medals were presented to the top three finishers in each category, and every competitor received a participation medal.
The committee wishes to extend many thanks to the volunteers who provided support behind the scenes to ensure the event was a success.
“We really had a special team of people who prepared and served food, provided refreshments at rest stops, groomed the trails and put out signage, took photographs, and offered first aid and parking services,” stated the committee. “They did a tremendous amount of work and we couldn't have done it without them.”
The Big Land Loppet also received support from the business community. Cash, prizes and in-kind support was provided by PAL Airlines, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, Minipi Outfitters, DBH Ltd., the Labrador Regional Wellness Coalition and the Birch Brook Nordic Ski Club.
