Birch Brook Nordic skiers enjoy participation in Canada 150 event at Labrador West

Young skiers from the Birch Brook Nordic Ski Club turned in a good showing on Feb. 25 and 26 at the Canada 150 Kidsfest, hosted by the Menihek Nordic Ski Club in Labrador City.

In addition to the medals awarded for the top three finishers, the members of the Jackrabbit ski program returned home with memories of a fun weekend on the snow and meeting new friends.

A total of 40 skiers from the two clubs took part in ski and relay races, challenge events and sprints. Financial support was provided by Canada 150, a federal government program that celebrates the country's 150th birthday.

The objective of the Canada 150 Kidsfest was to bring young skiers together for a memorable and enjoyable weekend of cross-country skiing and fun. The goals included encouraging achievement through a team effort, meeting the needs of a wide range of skill levels, and encouraging good ski technique.

 

Medal recipients in the classic races and their times included the following:

  • Midget girls, 2.4 km – First, Sophia Graham, 14:24; second, Claire Colbourne, 14:35.
  • Mini-midget girls, 2.4 km – First, Caroline Graham, 13:10; third, Olivia Crane, 16:50.
  • Peewee girls, 1.6 km – Second, Ashlee Adams, 11:24.
  • Novice girls, .3 km – First, Maddison Combden, 4:47.

 

Medal recipients in the freestyle races and their times included the following:

  • Midget girls, 2.4 km – Second, Sophia Graham, 10:45.
  • Mini-midget girls, 2.4 km – Second, Caroline Graham, 10:59.
