PLACENTIA, NL — Jordan Pomeroy is one step closer to following in the footsteps of other softball players from Newfoundland and Labrador who have represented Canada internationally.
The 17-year-old from Placentia is one of two players from this province to receive an invite to the national junior men’s selection camp happening later this summer. Some of the 26 players taking part in that camp will then compete for Canada at the Men’s World Softball Championship in Whitehorse, N.W.T.
“To hear the news, obviously I was ecstatic,” said Pomeroy, who attended an open tryout in St. John’s earlier this year before receiving an invite to the selection camp taking place in O’Leary, P.E.I immediately following the Canadian men’s under-18 championships.
Pomeroy has mostly played infield throughout his career, though he has recently been playing more in the outfield as a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Canada Games team. To help prepare for the games, the team has played in the St. John’s Senior Men’s Softball League. He’s also playing with the Team Newfoundland and Labrador under-18 squad in the St. John’s intermediate league.
Looking ahead to the selection camp running Aug. 21-25, Pomeroy expects he’ll need to be at his best. He fully intends to train hard between now and then.
“I just need to obviously be at the best of my possible ability, train hard leading up to it, and hopefully just be the best that I can be and (not) perform poorly in comparison to what I can do,” he said.
Having graduated from Grade 12 at Laval High School last month, Pomeroy has a busy summer ahead. The Canada Games men’s softball competition starts July 29 and concludes Aug. 4. Then there’s the Under-18 Men’s Canadian Championships in O’Leary Aug. 16-20, with Pomeroy sticking around town for the selection camp.
“It’s going to be a very full August for sure,” said Pomeroy.
Pomeroy is one of four players from the Placentia area on the Canada Games team. Brent Hatfield, Andrew Kelly and Nick Pittman join him on the team.
