CONCEPTION BAY SOUTH, N.L - This was recognized as both tough a competitor and welcoming host during the 2016 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, which concluded Saturday in the community.

The town, the Games organizing committee and it volunteers received glowing reviews from seemingly everybody during the week-long event that ended with closing ceremonies Saturday evening.

Eric Schibler, the Games chairman, and Conception Bay South mayor Steve Tessier acknowledged that effort during the official part of the closing. The mayor said he has never been more proud to be from the town.

The Host Region’s team was lauded as being courteous on the field of play, showing the same sportsmanship displayed by most all of the hundreds of athletes and coaches throughout the competitions. That was recognized with the presentation to the Host Region of the Lieutenant Governor Award for most spirited and sports-minded region.

The host was also presented with the SportNL Award for greatest improvement in points between the two most recent Games. St. John's/North captured the Premier's Award for most overall points and also won the most gold medals, with 36. Mount Pearl/South had the most overall medals, with 70.

Saturday’s closing ceremonies, emceed by comedians Berni Stapleton and Amy House, brought the same party-like atmosphere for the second half athletes as the opening ceremonies which kick-started the event two weeks previous.

While local musicians rocked the stage again, a trio of Newfoundland and Labrador athletes who have achieved national success were in attendance to provide some inspiring words. Basketball star Carl English, wheelchair basketball player Liam Hickey and female baseball standout Heather Healey answered question from Stapleton in a thoughtful and inspirational segment.
