Expect some dirty weather as you ring in the new year this weekend. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for much of the province including:

• Avalon Peninsula North

• Avalon Peninsula Southeast

• Avalon Peninsula Southwest

• Bonavista North

• Bonavista Peninsula

• Burin Peninsula

• Clarenville and vicinity

• Connaigre

• Gander and vicinity

• St. John's and vicinity

• Terra Nova

Two low pressure systems are expected to affect eastern Newfoundland this weekend. The first low is forecast to develop south of Nova Scotia tonight before tracking just southeast of the Avalon Peninsula on Saturday evening. This system has the potential to bring significant snowfall in a short period on Saturday afternoon and evening.

Should the low arrive further to the north than current guidance indicates, higher snowfall amounts are likely.

A second system is expected to develop along the East Coast of the United States on Saturday night and track over the Avalon on Sunday night.
While it is too soon to determine exactly how this low will affect Newfoundland, early indications suggest it could bring significant snowfall amounts and strong winds to eastern portions of the island.

There is some uncertainty with respect to the intensity and track of these systems. Environment Canada will continue to monitor their development and provide additional information as it becomes available.
