Mealy Mountain Collegiate is hosting a leadership conference in Happy Valley-Goose Bay this week. The conference, named Northern LEAD, will take place from November 3-4 and will feature workshops and two guest speakers.
“This event supports the safe, caring and inclusive practices in our schools,” said Sherry Jennings, a teacher at MMC and an organizer of the event. “Students and teachers will work together to network and build relationships that will support them as leaders within their communities.”
Jennings said the students that attend this conference have been nominated by their teachers and the workshops that are both educational and interactive. Teacher chaperones will also have the chance to collaborate with their colleagues within the Labrador region and attend sessions that support their own professional development.
The guest speakers at the event are Jeremy Bennett and Rose Adams. Bennett, an award winning speaker and author, will be holding two presentations on stress and anxiety, one for the students and one for adults. They are being held at the Lawrence O’Brien Centre at 7 p.m. on November 3 and 4, with the former being for adults. It is free of charge and first come, first serve. The second presentation is for the students attending the conference, but it is also open to any Grade 7-12 student.
Adams, an award winning businesswoman, entrepreneur and lawyer for 20 years, will be speaking to the conference students on Saturday morning, with the help of the Rotary Club of Happy Valley-Goose Bay. She speaks of the challenges she faced in her life and how she overcame them.
