CORNER BROOK A record 46 vollyeball teams will hit the hardcourt this weekend in the quest for a 2013 Vollleywest crown.
The two-day event gets underway today with the first serve at 4 p.m. at both of the tournament venues — the five-court Pepsi Studio and two courts at Corner Brook Regional High. Action will continue Saturday with champions being crowned in four divisions at the end of the day.
The senior male division will feature eight teams with Corner Brook Regional High, Main River Academy and Viking Trail Academy in the hunt for gold, while the senior female division will see Corner Brook Regional High and Pasadena Academy among the 19 teams vying for gold.
Presentation and G. C. Rowe have entries in the junior high female bracket where 15 teams will battle for bragging rights, while four teams — two from both Presentation Junior High in Corner Brook and Pasadena Academy — will compete for top honours in the junior high division.
Officials for the tournament will include members of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Sea-Hawks varsity men’s volleyball team that participates in the Atlantic University Sport. The Sea-Hawks roster includes two guys who honed their skills on the west coast of the province — Cohen Chaulk and Tyler Rowsell.
Both Sea-Hawks rookies represented Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2013 Canada Summer Games with Chaulk suiting up for the indoor team and Rowsell serving it up for his province on the beach.
As a special treat for volleyball enthusiasts in the west, the Sea-Hawks will be holding an intra-squad game Saturday on the main court of the Pepsi Studio with 2 p.m. slotted for the start time.
