The team includes: front - Maddison Winters; middle (l-r) - Morgan Janes, Emily Blake and Cayliee Hopkins; back - Harry Lucci (coach), Hannah Lucci, Leah Gosse, Leah Spracklin and Peter Goose (coach).
The third Junior Labrador Cup, sponsored by Hamilton Drugs, took place May 9-11 and, with continued success, showcased over 180 of the greatest young soccer players Labrador has to offer.
Teams from Labrador West joined teams from Happy Valley- Goose Bay over the three days to entertain and delight parents and fans with some tight games and even some fantastic goals and saves.
The game of the weekend was the under-12 girls final, which went into two overtime sessions with the game deadlocked. An abundance of screaming mothers were celebrating their Mother's Day by witnessing one of the most exciting games to take place in the tournament.
The teams took to the floor in the dreaded shootout, consisting of a player from each team going one-on-one with the opposing goaltender to try and end the tie.
After 19 shooters it was the Goose Bay Orange team scoring the game-winning goal over Team Red from Labrador West.
In another close final, the under 14 boys Goose Bay team narrowly lost their game to Labrador West 1-0. The Lab West team scored early in the second half, leaving Goose Bay fighting to try and tie it for most of the latter part of the game. Despite a barrage of shots from forwards and defense, and a late rush by Goose Bay's goalkeeper, they were unable to get the game to a draw.
The Hamilton Drugs Junior Labrador Cup committee (which is a sub-committee of the minor soccer association) would like to send a special thank-you to their crystal sponsor Hamilton Drugs, the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay recreation staff, Labrador Regional Wellness Coalition, Hamilton Wholesalers and everyone else involved who helped make this event a great success.
