After a dramatic playoff run, where they were nearly eliminated in the first round, The Crunch became the new North West River Dart League champions.

In the exciting best-of-11 championship match, which took place April 9, The Crunch was pitted against The Bald Headed Stags, underdogs for much of the season.

Things were not looking good for The Crunch in the first half of the game. The team was shooting well, but had trouble finishing. The Bald Headed Stags capitalized with some clutch shots and quickly went ahead three legs to one.

But The Crunch had been in worse situations before. In the first round of the playoffs, they were nearly defeated by The Mummers, who finished last in the regular season standings.

Down five legs to three, The Crunch was forced to pull off three straight victories to keep their championship dreams alive.

The Crunch then caught fire and demolished their semifinal opponents 6-2.

Once again, when The Crunch looked down and out, they found a way to gain momentum. They would go on to win five of the next six legs, taking the championship series 6-4. In the final leg, Kevin Gear sealed the deal with a 71-point finish.

For team captain Edwin Budgell, the taste of victory is sweet after an up and down season.

“It feels excellent, really, really, excellent,” said Budgell. “I was hopeful, and we pulled it off in the end.”
