Though the teams are still battling it out on the ice for the big award, the Newfoundland Senior Hockey League announced its individual player awards for the East and West divisions over the weekend.

The first-place Grand Falls-Windsor Senior Cataracts have plenty to be proud of this season, as Cats’ coach Shane Lukinchuk has been recognized as coach of the year, while netminder A.J. Whiffen proved to be top of the pack between the posts.

A new face on the team this season was also recognized for his tremendous contribution, as Rob Hennigar was named Western MVP.

According to a release issued on the league website (www.NLSHL.ca) after the review of nominations for non statistic-based awards, the league decided to assign all league awards on a divisional basis to highlight success and accomplishment in each division.

Determination of the final awards on a league-wide basis will be provided by Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador as part of the completion of the Herder Memorial Trophy finals in March.
