The 11th Labrador Winter Games last week marked the 30th anniversary of games.

The night was a time of celebration. It included music, team appearances and even a video message from CBC funnyman Rick Mercer – who showed up on Friday to take part.

Goose Bay resident Hollis Yetman was brought out to have the flag raised. Yetman sawed, chiseled and hammered away at the ice, until finally the flag could be freed and lifted to the rafters.

To officially declare the games open, the oldest and youngest athletes - 75 year old Margret Pike of West St. Modeste and 11 year old Riley Pye of Lodge Bay - lite the caldron.

Labrador City’s Alph Parsons was declared the games patron.

The 62-year-old athlete has been heavily involved in the games since its inception and has won some 30 medals over the years.

“The games are great,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to compete and a chance to reconnect with a tonne of friends from all over Labrador.”

Be sure to check back next week for more Games coverage.
