The Senior Women’s Broomball Championships were held in St. Anthony this past weekend, with Goose Bay’s Hotel North emerging victorious in a 1-0 squeaker.

Goose Bay had a perfect record after round robin play, winning all four games they played. They shut out Corner Brook twice, 3-0 and 5-0; and defeated St. John’s 2-1, and 1-0 in overtime.

They defeated St. Anthony’s Subway Northern Storm (2-0) in the semi-finals to advance.

The team would face the 3-1 Twin Town Tornadoes, who beat the St. John’s Sabres 1-0 in the semi-finals.

The period opened strong with Goose Bay mounting a strong offence. With 11:40 left on the clock, a shot from Goose Bay’s Kelly Way took an odd bounce to find its way pass the Twin Town netminder.

Twin Town tried to capitalize on a interference power play, attempting a few runs at bringing the game back to even, but couldn’t find a way past goaltender Joanna Elliott.

In the second, it was much the same, Goose Bay controlled the majority of the play, but Twin Town played a strong defencive game with their goaltending being tested on more than one occasion.

In the final minutes of the period, Twin Town rallied a strong effort to bring the game back to even, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Janine Battock was chosen Top Defense in the tournament while Joanna Elliott picked up the Top Goalie award. Kayla Nolan was Top Scorer and Adrienne Morris was Team MVP.
