Happy Valley-Goose Bay hosted a provincial judo competition earlier this month at the Labrador Training Centre.
Normally, Judo competitors from the area have to travel to the island for provincial competition. The local Judo club was organized in 1976 by Bob Simms and this is only the second time the provincials were hosted here.
Competitors came from Gander, Stephenville Crossing and St. John’s for the event.
Terry Whey, one of the members of the local club, said his favourite part of the competition is that it allows local Judo athletes to gain experience.
He added children as young as three years old can get involved in Judo, and people can continue in the sport for as long as they want.
At the moment, three members of the local club are trying out for the provincial team that will go to the Canada Winter Games.
