Mealy Mountain Collegiate (MMC) Female Soccer captured gold and the AAA provincial banner at School Sports Newfoundland Labrador provincial championship in Springdale Newfoundland Oct. 11-13.

It was a long road for the MMC females after losing by one goal to Menihek High School (Labrador City) by one goal in a two game total goals regional tournament held in Goose Bay on Sept. 21st.  Both coaches Mr. Edmund Turpin and Mr. Andrew Rowsell felt the girls did not play to their full potential, causing the team to go to an application process to apply for a wildcard spot.

The school was granted a wildcard spot on Oct 2, and on Oct 10th the girls set off on their journey which took them down the road to the straits across and on to Springdale.

They arrived Thursday, playing their first game against Mobile Central High. The game was rough with MMC hammering MCH10-0.

Friday they met Clarenville High and defeated them 3-1. With a game against Ascension Collegiate on Saturday, they easily won the game, earning MMC fist in their division with a 3-0 record and a pass to the championship against Stephenville High.

In the championship game MMC trailed Stephenville 1-0 after the first half. In the second half a rejuvenated MMC took to the field and tied the game with a strike off the left foot of Caleigh Ivany tying the game 1-1.

The game remained tied and went into 20-minute overtime half. Striker Amy Rowsell’s header slammed into the back of the Stephenville goal, giving MMC a precious 2-1 lead.

With time running down MMC began defensive shield holding Stephenville at bay to capture the 2012 SSNL Provincial Soccer Champion.

Coaches Mr. Turpin and Mr.Rowsell would like to thank the MMC girls for representing their school and community with class. They display superior skills, excellent work ethic, and exceptional sportsmanship throughout.
