Special to the Labradorian
A team of Central and Coastal Labrador residents travelled to Blanc Sablon, Quebec for an annual hockey showdown on Jan. 20.
The team of 12 recreation hockey players, under the banner of ‘Green’s Construction’, won each of their games in the three-day cash prize tournament.
The team participated in the ‘B’ division and faced off against a team from the Labrador Straits, the Budweiser Bandits and two teams from the Quebec lower north shore, the Canadiens and the Chiefs. Two teams were eliminated in the semi-final round and ‘Green’s Construction’ found itself in the final.
The closest game for the team was the championship on Sunday evening when the Quebec Team, the Chiefs, dug in and gave the guys a good run for their money.
With 16 seconds left in the last period and a 3-2 lead for Green’s Construction, the Chiefs pulled their goalie and prepared to face-off in the Labrador zone. The few Labrador fans and soon the players let out a roar when it was realize that the clock had not been restarted. Some debate ensued and the players again found themselves facing off in the Labrador zone with 16 seconds left on the clock. Luckily for the Big Land players, they quickly cleared the puck from their zone and straight into the Quebec open net to celebrate a 4-2 win.
The team took home the tournament banner and a $500 cash prize.
The Raiders of Quebec took home the banner for the tournament’s ‘A’ division.
