The Jens Haven Memorial Huskies of Nain don’t get to a lot of provincial tournaments because of the cost of travelling.

However, when they do get out to compete against their peers, they prove themselves to be quite the contenders.

That was the story from 3A provincial boys volleyball tournament on Dec. 1-2, hosted by Pearson Collegiate of New Wes Valley.

The Huskies proved unbeatable in the round robin and defeated King Academy Warriors of Harbour Breton in the semi-final the advance to the gold-medal match.

They went down to defeat against Pearson Academy, 25-16 and 25-22, but came away not only with the silver medals, but with the team Sportsmanship banner.

David Brown, who plays with Pearson Academy, gave them a huge pat on the back for their play.

They played well, put up a strong fight, and I’m glad the trip wasn’t a waste of time for them. They’re gone home with the sportsmanship banner and the silver medal, and I’m really happy for them. - David Brown

“It’s pretty phenomenal. They don’t get to play a lot of tournaments in Newfoundland because of the travel costs,” said Brown. “I have a couple of friends from Jens Haven that I played provincial volleyball with over the summer — Patrick Webb and Nick Okkatsale — and it was good to see them here.

“They played well, put up a strong fight, and I’m glad the trip wasn’t a waste of time for them. They’re gone home with the sportsmanship banner and the silver medal, and I’m really happy for them.”

The Huskies are from Nain, not Happy Valley Goose Bay! Way to go boys!
