After two days of canoeing down a 67-mile stretch of river, the brothers were in the lead in the male under-45 category at this year’s Great Labrador Canoe Race. They came across the finish line just that way.
Last year the brothers were on separate teams and took home both the first and third place medals for their division.
“The boys always do well,” said their beaming father. “ Whatever sport they play, they’ll be medals.”
They finished eight minutes behind the male over-45 winners and father and son team Phil and Malcolm Graham.
“The race was harder than last year,” said Joseph.
The winds were stronger and this year the brothers chose the endurance race over the ten kilometres.
“The hardest part was going up over Muskrat Falls,” said Anautak.
They were only able to borrow an aluminum canoe for the race whereas the other racers mostly had wooden canoes. The steep hill the racers had to portage, as part of the endurance was their most difficult challenge.
Within minutes of their start in the 10-kilometre women’s over-45 race, Delphine Roberts and Colleen Baikie were floating in the choppy water. They were not fazed, by either the cold water or the overturned canoe, and were soon back in the canoe rowing hard through the strong currents towards the finish line. The two eventually finished in first place.
The waters were not as calm this year for the annual race in it’s second year but that did not stop canoeists from taking to the water. A total of 19 teams registered in the new 67-kilometre expedition race with a further 22 teams competing in the 10 kilometre race down the Churchill River.
Organizer Perry Trimper said he was very pleased with the turnout.
“The best part is seeing everybody out on the beach having a good time,” he said.
Mr. Trimper said the biggest challenge in the race was keeping the participants safe. The local search and rescue and RCMP helped out patrolling the race in their boats.
“Hats off to Search and Rescue for being here,” Mr. Trimper said.
The annual event takes place in August every year. Check out the website www.labradorcanoerace.com for more information.
