Judo club performs well in competition

On March 27, The Goose Bay Judo Club went to Stephenville for a competition and also attended a training camp with J.P Cantin, a former Olympian, on March 28.

At the competition the club was able to obtain four gold medals and four silver.

Terry Whey, head coach, said he was pleased with how the club performed.

"Our club was well represented and I was pleased with the level of competition," Mr. Whey said.

In the Female 40-kg category, Megan Hanrahan won gold, and silver went to Mary-Kate Randell,

In the Male 46-kg, Kyle Decker won gold with silver going to Joshua McGrath. Male 55-kg gold went to Joel Decker,

The Female 57-kg gold medal was won by Rebekah Whey, Male 81-kg silver went to Gavin Evans, and Brittany Chaulk earned a silver medal in the Female 63-kg.

Rebekah Whey was also presented with the most spirited award and Lou Byrne was promoted to provincial level referee.

Mr. Whey said the tentative team for the Canada Winter Games will be picked shortly with a few of the Goose Bay athletes in good position to make the team.

The group will be traveling to Halifax on April.
