I attended the Residential Tenancies Act — legislative review meeting at the Two Seasons Inn, Labrador City, on Oct. 29.
I was very pleased to see that our MHA and Service NL Minister Nick McGrath was there to observe the proceedings. I was not pleased to note that the local newspaper and the local TV stations were not present.
The situations described by those in attendance should have been captured in a news story.
When asked point blank by attendee Daryl Brenton the question: “Even if you agree with our suggestions for change, when is the very earliest that they can be made into the legislation?” The answer was, “In the spring session of the House.”
Mr. Brenton followed up with the point that people in the audience should know that this process is going to take time.
Meanwhile, people are suffering from high rent and poor living conditions and are afraid to speak out because they don’t want to be put out in the street. Spring is a long time away in Labrador.
Labrador City Mayor Karen Oldford and several others made presentations and asked questions. The meeting was a success, but the lack of media attendance is disappointing.
