I write in response to an article published in the March 4, 2014 print edition of The Compass, headlined "Bay Roberts to purchase equipment for new new fire truck."

letter to editor

Firstly, I want to make it very clear that I do not regret the purchase of this valuable piece of equipment to assist our very valued firefighters. And now that we have it, we need to ensure that it is ready to protect our residents and properties. That being said, I would just like to briefly clarify my position regarding that whole transaction.

The amount budgeted, some $120,000, minus the taxes (a portion of which will be rebated), was the amount presented to the council table. As I was quoted, "I might have wrongly assumed that hoses would come with the truck," is exactly correct. I, as a new councillor sitting to that table, had no idea that we would have to then purchase hoses and radios for the truck. We were at no time advised of that; not a hint.

If I, as a registered nurse, was tasked to price out a new "crash cart," for example, I would not assume that everyone in receipt of the projected cost knew that the cart would not come with the drugs needed to use that cart effectively. The cost of the equipment, drugs, etc, would also be priced and included in the estimation of the amount. What would be the point of buying a new cart if we haven't budgeted for the equipment required to use it. It would be like buying a fire truck with no hoses.

The old saying: "Yer always wiser coming from the market" rang more true for this councillor.

Future purchases for the Town of Bay Roberts — at least any that I am involved with — will be scrutinized much closer than this one was.

— Charlene Dawe-Roach is a councillor with the Town of Bay Roberts

All comes back to the cozy companionship of the mayor and the old chief. Council went along for the ride. More brainwash and decisions behind the council meeting then there was real homework being done. An unreliable aged piece of apparatus!

To the writer who identifies himself as "Consern Taxpayer". Clearly, your writing skills are not going to be your contribution to the world. When I went to school, we were taught such things as punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure, etc. Other than that, though, we do not need to see your diatribe three times. Those of us who can decipher it will get it the first time. We really will. Next time, one mouse click will have us reading your message loud and clear..........well, not exactly clear, but you get the message.

Impossible to keep an eye on what is going on with Bay Roberts council - anything embarrassing gets buried in" privileged meetings." Its like living in North Korea - even the Compass in censored!

I guess this council is the same as the last, they assumes things also.Just imagine buying a fire truck and spending another 16,000 dollars that"s not to bad the last council gave away 250,000 and bought the same piece of land for another 260,000 this does not include legal fees. This councillor states you are wiser coming from the market place I think it"s time they came from the market the old saying is it"s a lot easier to spend someone"s money than your own. Imagine giving these people 7,000,000 dollars to spend as they wish it would make you shiver, just thinking about it.Imagine having these people working for you.Why did it take a 16,000 mistake before council would scrutinized spending. After the 250,000 god only knows how much more of which they will never recover, how many reasons should you have to keep a close scrutiny on spending

You are now involved in Government where there is NO Room for common sense. You are spending someone elses money so don't let it bother you and never admit to any mistakes while in office. You may go far!
