Dear Editor,

At Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, our top priority is to ensure the safety of employees, contractors and the public. Hydro continues to raise awareness among those who work around power lines to be safe.

In the past several weeks, there have been five power line contacts by contractors, bringing the total number of contacts this year to 13.   This is an extremely alarming trend with life safety consequences.

It is critically important to understand that contact with power lines is extremely dangerous and can be fatal.  We are urging the public, contractors and heavy equipment operators to take this message seriously.  There are very easy steps to take to prevent a fatality:

1) Be aware of the hazards associated with electricity and take the appropriate precautions when working around power lines.

2) Take the time to locate and ensure adequate clearances from overhead and underground power lines before beginning work.

3) Pay complete attention. All accidents can be prevented with proper planning and worksite evaluation.

4) Call your utility. We will work with you to plan a safe route if towing equipment or to have power lines de-energized, barricaded or moved from a work site if required. Call either Hydro at 1.888.737.1296 or Newfoundland Power at 1.800.663.2802 for more information.

If these power line contacts do not stop, it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed. Please stay safe for you and your families.

Additional information about working safely around electrical equipment can be found on our safety website, HydroSafety.ca.
