And police investigators can thank a very important device — a video surveillance camera — for helping arrest the suspect only three hours after the incident was reported.

Officers with the Trinity Conception RCMP were called to the business just after 9 a.m. on Aug. 24. They quickly reviewed video footage that had been recorded overnight, and discovered that a male had entered the business at roughly 3 a.m. and helped himself to some cash and cigarettes.

A suspect was identified, and at around noon, the man was located by officers along the Main Road in Shearstown.

The man fled into the woods on foot, prompting a larger response by police. A short time later, with the help of a police service dog, the suspect was located and apprehended behind a nearby residence.

The 27-year-old male was held in police custody overnight, and will later appear in Harbour Grace provincial court on charges of break and enter and failing to comply with a probation order.

RCMP Sgt. Greg Hicks said the accused is known to police, having been convicted in the past on similar offences.

Hicks said the presence of a surveillance system helped advance the investigation very quickly.

"I recommend it. It's certainly a deterrent," Hicks replied when asked about the value of installing surveillance cameras in a business.
