Man faces charges relating to alcohol and parole violations

RCMP in Happy Valley-Goose Bay issued a seven-day administrative driver’s license suspension after a 28-year old male was stopped and administered a roadside-screening test for alcohol.

The incident happened on July 20.

RCMP have also charged a 51-year old male with operation of a motor vehicle while over the legal limit

On July 19 at approximately 3:10 a.m., Goose Bay RCMP received an anonymous complaint of an impaired driver. An officer on patrol was able to locate the vehicle on Kelland Drive and initiated a traffic stop.

After detecting signs of alcohol impairment, a roadside-screening device was utilized and a fail was registered by the driver. The male driver was taken to the RCMP detachment where breath samples were obtained, resulting in a charge of operation of a motor vehicle while over .08 and impaired driving.

The male is scheduled to appear in Provincial Court on September 3.

In addition to the charges relating to impaired driving, RCMP further determined the male was in breach of his parole conditions. As a result, the male was held in custody — pending a decision by the Correctional Service of Canada — on whether or not his parole will be revoked.

According to S/Sgt. Don Rogers, Goose Bay RCMP have charged 26 persons for impaired driving offences since January 2014, with two of the suspensions due to drug use, and the remainder involving alcohol. During the same period in 2013, RCMP charged 19 persons with impaired driving offences.

“The detection of impaired driving is a priority of the Happy Valley Goose Bay RCMP,” noted S/Sgt. Rogers.

“It is disappointing that impaired driving continues to be prevalent in the community.”

He requests the public to report suspected impaired drivers to the RCMP at 896-3383.
