The Happy Valley-Goose Bay Ground Search and Rescue team was deployed to help locate a missing 76-year-old man who was experiencing mechanical problems with his snowmobile.
On Sunday, April 20, the man and his wife took an afternoon trip to their cabin on Grand Lake Road, located just past Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
Around 12 p.m. the man left the cabin on his snowmobile, intending to be gone for an hour. When he didn’t return after a couple of hours, his wife began to walk 11 km to Route 520 to call for help from their vehicle.
The man is described as having a history of heart problems and normally returns on time.
Luckily, a passing snowmobiler gave the woman a ride so she didn’t have to walk the entire 11 km. At around 5 p.m., she was able to contact the RCMP.
While the ground search and rescue team prepared to do a search by snowmobile, a helicopter was deployed to assist, due to the lateness of the day.
At 6:55 p.m. the man walked out of the bush and was in good health. He explained that he was forced to walk after his snowmobile broke down.
