The Canadian Coast Guard ‘Ice Atlantic’ is advising residents the ‘C.C.G.S. George R. Pearkes’ will be conducting a harbour breakout in the Boat Harbour, Placentia Bay, area starting Tuesday, Mar. 11.
The icebreaker will be leaving an open water track in its wake in the ice.
Area residents using snowmobiles or all terrain vehicles on the ice are asked to take note.
The CCG informs local communities of the inherent risks of icebreaking activities. It cannot have absolute control on the behaviour of the ice.
Depending on various conditions, the ice can be pushed instead of broken and ice can crack or break far away from the location where the icebreaker is working. This can cause risks for the safety of people and property.
The public is warned to act accordingly, i.e. refrain from walking on the ice, remove mobile equipment in advance of icebreaking activities and protect permanently non-moveable property.
