Municipal Affairs Minister Steve Kent is getting nomination paper signed, and preparing for a run at the PC Party leadership, although he’s careful to say that no final decision has been made — yet.

“I am very close to a decision, and I am preparing nomination papers in the event that I make a decision to pursue this.”

Kent is one of only two Tory cabinet ministers who are said to be considering a leadership run.

He spoke to The Telegram Monday morning and confirmed that he’s very seriously looking at the leadership, but he’s not quite ready to make the plunge yet.

“This is one of the biggest decisions I’ve had to make thus far in my career,” Kent said. “It has significant impact on my family, and for that reason, it requires really careful consideration.”

The deadline for getting into the race is Friday. The only candidate thus far to formally put in his papers is fish processing businessman Bill Barry.

Kent was keeping his cards close to his chest on Monday; he acknowledged that if he runs he’ll have to step out of cabinet, and said that he’s looking forward to a spirited leadership race.

But he wouldn’t talk policy or renewal, saying that he’d like to save those sorts of discussions for his campaign launch — if he decides to run.

“The conversation that wil ensue during the campaign is very much about the future of our province, and I look forward to building that future, whether it’s as a leadership candidate or as a member of caucus,” he said. “One way or another, I’ll be very active in the campaign, and I may very well be a candidate.”

Seems like this clown wants to make sure he will win the leadership before he makes his final decision. He has always been the suck-up and pucker-up boy of the Tory party. Not a good choice for leader of the province.

Give it up Stevey. You are not leadership material. Your record from the boy scouts speaks for itself. Go away!

To McLean, What do you want me to do, read the paper for you? Try this for just a couple of examples.. Go back and look at the articles by Bob Wakeham. See if you can find one that doesn't have a personal attack in it. Also, look at the Telegram's cartoons of Williams and Dunderdale and see how insulting they are.

Good day everyone, Just finishes reading this article and long with all comment's. I have to agree with the most of them, But there one that really stick out, One by Steve, singing the praise's of Mr Kent. Don't get me wrong, I do understand Steve supporting Mr Kent because they are school friends. Steve here is my question to you, Lets say MHA accumulated ( Air Mile's ) by doing work on behalf of the people. Remember He/She is getting pay to fulfill these duty. Don't you think those air miles should be turn back to the people, so they can be past on to the food bank, and turn into food item's for the needy. Or should they be use to take your family on a trip? Steve if Mr Kent was doing something like this, Please stand on the highest mountain and sing out his praises, Because I would join you, Because we both would have something to sing about.

Father Dohey has better chance of becoming Pope than Kent does of becoming leader of the PC party and Premier.

@ Steve, Your full of crap.(Yes) its the responsibility of Government to create jobs. If any one say to no this, Is trying to say, once we votes someone in, they have the right's to pick our pockets with no return of investment on their part. Just become a burden to society, Stevie you can bring in the ( Communist Russia ) all you like. No matter how you may sing this song. They must be held accountable to the people. To do the best for our citizens ...wouldn't you agree? Now Stevie just because Mr Kent got a MBA at McGill, that still don't make him a leader.. I would be more then happy to take Mr Kent on in public, Then maybe you would get some kind of ideas what can be done for our people. Not just wind blowing on your part.

This guy has shown himself to be a self-centered egotist with an attitude of "if it's Tory it's good" - Dare to question Tory policy & you are his sworn enemy. I certainly don't see any of the potential candidates as viable. If Coleman enters the race as Dannys' boy, he would win but it will probably hurt him financially. For a businessman who relies on the good will of NL public for his business interests, he would be wise to give politics a wide berth. Sad really.. how the governing party who have so much power stand to lose it all, & have so little talent in the cabinet that they turn to the likes of Steve Kent.

This province needs someone with the intelligence of Tom Marshall to lead us. The province cannot be run on the ego of Steve Kent. If truth be known, he was pretty close to quitting the party until Dunderdale caved in and made him a minister, worst mistake EVER.

If the top party brass (and that doesn't include Kent) are at all serious about staying in power I can guarantee you that right now in the back room Tom Marshall is being begged to stay on as leader permanently. It wouldn't even surprise me if that was the plan from the beginning, wouldn't be the first time.

I don't see a bright future for the Tory party .The convention will be a platform for the person that Danny Williams wants but the Liberals will win the next two general elections . The people of the province are tired of this government and they want a change no matter what . If we vote for this current administration we are saying " we agree with your policies and we want you to continue " . Most voters have had enough . It doesn't matter if Steve Kent runs .

I am aghast at the mean spirited, personal attacks against Mr. Kent. I am not a tory but by why would an individual with a great interest in the governance of this province with a TWENTY YEAR elected track record in provincial and municipal politics, with an extensive record of volunteering and community resource building, not to mention his education, not run for the job? What I see is a focused, hard working, dedicated, life long activist who has risen to the opportunities that have come his way. He accomplished a great deal, and will not doubt accomplish a lot more. He deserves respect because he has earned it.

      March 10, 2014 - 13:17

Peter, I'm not sure why this would surprise you if you've read the Telegram for any length of time. The Telegram's whole focus since Danny Williams got elected has been to orchestrate the meanest, dirtiest personal attacks on any Tory who raises his or her head. Even posters who don't join into the bullying by the Telegram are labelled Tory hacks. The subject of the attacks doesn't even have to be factual. It's a "take no prisoners" strategy from a once decent newspaper to what is now a sensationalist tabloid. Thank you Mr. Wangersky.

    • Sam
      March 10, 2014 - 13:51

      March 10, 2014 - 14:10

Jay, have to disagree with you. The PC government has done a terrible job on the communications front and can not take the least bit of criticism. The media's job is not to be puppet for an arrogant government. Not getting back to reporters on deadlines, hiding briefing notes, developing purple files on "dissidents, suffocating freedom of information legislation , failing to be transparent, blacklisting reporters and residents ...the list goes on. "Shooting the messenger does not solve the problem. I fail to see your point, is the Telegram reports the news, the comments are moderated. They published mine which sort of makes your nonsensical point moot. Perhaps it the government was less arrogant, less patriarchal, less secretive, less entitled and more forthcoming the Telegram and other news organizations would not have to spend thousands of dollars in FOI requests and thousands of hours trying to report the news and acting like the official opposition. PEter Peter

      March 10, 2014 - 14:18

Sam: The article, in case you had not noticed it was simply reporting that the former two term mayor of Mount Pearl, two term MHA and current Cabinet Minister was preparing for a possible leadership bid. There is no bias, just a statement of fact and a follow-up interview. I am very much aware of the clandestine black-ops game that ALL THREE parties play by stacking open line programs, letters to the editor and on-line forums like this. Frankly it sickens me. Lots of the pot calling the frying pan black here.

Peter, has this fellow not been a big part of that which you describe regarding the poor communications of this government and disgraceful behaviour on social media in particular? Oh yes. Before he was finally vaulted to Cabinet not that long ago either, he was one of the dirtiest pit bulls the Tories had. Hilarious that you think he is any way competent to be Premier. The fact we are even considering the prospect tells me how desperate times are here, how desperate things are in the PC party and how incredible some people's views are. Especially a former (?) political operative like yourself.

    • Jon
      March 10, 2014 - 18:39

And Peter, you speak of thousands in FOI requests. Isn't Kent the minister responsible for the OPE dept and just the other day obfuscated and bullsh*tted the people of NL about why gov was making the opposition and others pay such outrageous money for mere info?? Yes.

    • Observer
      March 10, 2014 - 19:58

Couldn't agree with you more. The once noble Telegram has sunken to tabloid status with the gang of Wangersky, Jones, Wakeham et al. Facts be damned. Personalities and character be damned. Promoting their agenda is all that matters. If only this province had hands-on access to real newspapers like the National Post and the Globe and Mail to read well-written and well-researched, provocative journalism, not the stuff we have to stomach, month in and month out, from the Telegram . The Telegram serves to promote the worst meanspiritedness and distrust that runs deep in this place. Matters not how much greatness, vision, integrity, intelligence or ambition a person might possess, the Telegram will attack and shred them at every opportunity.

    • Jay
      March 11, 2014 - 07:40

Oh, wait, let me guess...you'll go after Muskrat Falls.
