The Harbour Authority of Fogo Island in collaboration with Shorefast Foundation is hosting an Oil Spill Response Awareness Course on Fogo Island for 12 fishers on March 5-6. The course will be delivered by the Safety and Emergency Response Training (SERT) Centre of the Marine Institute of Memorial University.

The course will:

• Show the participants the impact and consequences of marine related oil spills

• Acquaint participants with organizations tasked with response to oil spills

• Train the participants in basic oil spill prevention, assessment, protection, containment, clean-up, and recovery strategies

The course is a component of Shorefast’s community education program to enable fishers and other citizens of Fogo Island to be more knowledgeable and conscious of oil contamination and its impact on marine life and the marine environment. The Fogo Island archipelago of islands is the home to tens of thousands of seabirds.

Earle McCurdy, president of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers said, “This initiative is a positive step in creating more awareness and less mystery amongst our fish harvesters regarding oil spill response in the province. The next step we need is acceptance by the oil industry and the people responsible for oil spill response that a comprehensive program is needed to train fish harvesters as first responders when oil spill cleanup is required,”

Gordon Slade, chair of the Shorefast Foundation and co-sponsor of the course said, "The health of the ocean is everyone’s responsibility and the more knowledgeable we all are the greater custodial care we can take of our ocean heritage.”

A public lecture will be given on Friday, March 7 at 730 PM at the Church of the Holy Spirit Parish Hall at Fogo Island Central by Dr. Bill Montevecchi, Memorial University Research Professor.

The title of the lecture is:  Eyes on the Water—Engaging Coastal Residents and the Fishing Community in Detecting and Reducing Marine Oil Pollution in NL.
