First major renovations at L’Anse-au-Loup fish plant

New equipment to be more automated and more efficient

The L’Anse-au-Loup fish plant is making an upgrade.

For the first time since 1995, the Labrador Fisherman’s Union Shrimp Company fish plant is undergoing major renovations to update its equipment.

All the plant’s old equipment will be replaced.

LFUSC General Manager Gilbert Linstead explains the plant’s workforce is getting older and smaller so they’ve decided to put in a new automated system in order to help alleviate the problems they’ve had with the worker shortage over the past few years.

The new equipment will be coming in later and presently maintenance work is taking place at the plant as it prepares for the installation.

They have also installed two new blast freezers which Linstead says will increase the plant’s capacity for pelagics (which is surface water fish such as capelin, herring, and mackerel) substantially.

“We should improve our freezing by 60 to 70 per cent and we’ve put some partitions into the building to get it ready for double lines,” he adds.

“There was a lot of female capelin going in amongst the male capelin and we weren’t getting the full benefit of it. So now with new equipment and the new capelin line, we’ll be able to hopefully get close to the maximum 100 per cent of the female capelin that’s going through.”

Linstead estimates the cost of the renovations will be between 750,000 and a million dollars.

They’re hoping the plant will be ready for May 1.
