The area known as Snow’s Cove is the site of the marina expansion in Lewisporte. Crews were busy hauling away the material removed from the marina basin as part of the expansion.
Heavy equipment crews are busy digging, hauling and dredging the area commonly know as Snow’s Cove to construct additional dock spaces for boaters this summer.
As part of the construction, the marina basin is being dredged to eight feet at low water mark — when the tide is at its lowest point there will still be eight feet of water in the basin. This will allow larger vessels access to dock at the marina.
Lewisporte Mayor Brian Sceviour said, “There is a demand for more dock spaces and the expansion leads to more growth and benefit for the Town.”
The marina basin isn’t the only part of the expansion plan. There will be work done on the shoreline to ensure it is consistent without any indentations. Along Snow’s Cove there are plans for a revetment wall, which is a stone wall that will be constructed from the high water mark to the depth of the dredged area. It will then be landscaped with a walking area and benches which will add to the beautification of the downtown area.
Currently, there is a waiting list of boaters who want to use the Marina facilities and when the expansion is completed there will be an additional 230 berth spaces with additional space for parking and storage.
The Town has applied to have the 11,000 cubic meters of soil removed from the marina basin to be put in the downtown parking area for any future expansions.
The Town anticipates the expansion work will be ongoing for the next three to four months and be fully operational by May month, just in time for the boating season.
While work is being carried out the Town is asking the public to refrain from entering the construction area for safety reasons and they appreciate everyone’s cooperation during this time.
