Doctors present proposal to Central Health

LEWISPORTE — On Jan. 24 the Lewisporte Town Council Economic Development Committee met with Senior Medical Officer for Lewisporte Dr. Wayne Collins to discuss emergency medical services.

Mayor Brian Sceviour said, “The doctors had a proposal prepared that they are sending to Central Health for their consideration on how to solve the problem.”

The committee is prepared to meet with Central Health as the next step in making emergency services available in Lewisporte.

“We now have options to start with,” Mayor Sceviour said.

In an interview with the Pilot Dr. Collins said, “This has been ongoing. We had an episode where we lost several physicians (in 2013) as you know and we had to downgrade some services because of lack of physicians and now, of course, the number of physicians have improved and now we’re trying our best to improve the quality of care without putting ourselves in a legal liability problem.”

The proposal included the signatures of all the physicians at the Medical Clinic and the chairperson of the Concerned Citizens group. Dr. Collins noted that they are trying to make this situation work for everybody all the way around. As of the Pilot deadline the physicians were waiting on a response from Central Health to their proposal.
