Water cleared earlier than expected after water main break

The residents of Bonavista, along with their holiday visitors, are no longer dealing with a boil water order in the town, as of this morning.

Betty Fitzgerald, mayor of Bonavista

The news was spread immediately by town staff through social media — Facebook and Twitter.

A boil water order — the second this month — was put in place after a water main break and subsequent repair on Dec. 18.

The town had been waiting on some required testing by the province of the community’s water before the latest boil order could be lifted. The town’s mayor, Betty Fitzgerald, said she was not expecting the results before Christmas Day.

“That’s wonderful,” she said, when reached by phone this morning. She had yet to be reached with the good news from town staff.

Like so many, Fitzgerald was busy at home, preparing for the holidays.

She said the town has recently dealt with a couple of problems related to its water system. “We had some vandalism and they damaged the metre and then we had the break right after,” she said.

The vandalism was to the electrical metre at a town chlorination facility. It resulted in a boil water order from Dec. 3 to Dec. 6.

Fitzgerald did not tie the incidents together, but explained they have acted as a reminder of the importance of water-related infrastructure to municipalities and the day to day lives of residents.
