Fire destroyed an abandoned building this afternoon on Powers Road in Portugal Cove.

The building, which did not have electricity running to it, was one of a number of abandoned buildings in what apparently is a former swine breeding farm.

Firefighters from Kents Pond fire station with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department were the first on the scene, while the Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s Fire Department responded a short time later.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

These abandoned buildings were a hang out for teenagers. I had to stop walking my dog there because of broken glass, used condoms and what looked like drugs - or the objects used to take them. The RNC should have been policing this area, instead of setting traps for honest people driving to work along Portugal Cove Road.
