St. John’s — Do you remember the floor of your childhood home’s kitchen buckling somewhat under the weight of a half-dozen or more mummers dancing and spinning to accordian music?
Whether you remember the knee-slapping laughter and music, the passing around of red syrup (or something stronger) and Christmas cake, or trying to guess who was under that crazy getup, Newfoundland folklorist Dale Jarvis would like to hear your memories. He’s love your old mummers photos, too.
Jarvis is doing research on mummering for a book he hopes to have out for next Christmas. Anyone with a memory to share can contact Jarvis by phone at 709-685-3444 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Or, if you have an old photo you want the world to see, you can post it in the Vintage Newfoundland Christmas group on Facebook.
