The voters of Happy Valley-Goose Bay let it be known that change is needed in their community.
In the September 24 municipal election, the people chose a mayor and six councilors that have never served on council before.
The mayoral race pitted John Hickey against Jamie Snook. Hickey served as Happy Valley-Goose Bay Mayor from 2001-2003, before being elected as Lake Melville MHA under Danny Williams’ government.
Jamie Snook won a landslide victory, receiving 1715 votes, compared to 774 for Hickey.
The six councilors elected are also fresh faces: Tony Chubbs, Cora Hamel Pardy, Shannon Tobin, Jackie Compton Hobbs, Tanya Michelin, and Bert Pomeroy, will all be serving their first ever terms in the council chamber.
The voters also wanted some young faces on council as well. 28-year-old Shannon Tobin was in the lead after the first three polls were counted, he would eventually finish in third place.
The new council will be sworn in within the next two weeks.

(Note: each eligible voter was allowed to vote for up to six candidates on the ballot. The six candidates with the most votes are selected to Council. Traditionally, the candidate who received the most votes is named Deputy Mayor, however, this is not a guarentee unless the Municipality has a specific vote for the position (which HV-GB does not). It is up to the Council to choose their Deputy Mayor at the first council meeting).
