St. John's is playing host this week to a gathering of the people responsible for keeping the lights on in small, remote communities across Canada.

The 22nd Prime Power Diesel Inter-Utility Conference is underway and runs through Thursday at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Centre.

The conference is an initiative of the Canadian Off Grid Utilities Association and participants are being welcomed to this province by Nalcor Energy's Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro.

The theme for the conference is "modular and expandable diesel plants," with planned sessions looking at renewable energy options and how they can be integrated with existing power systems.

About 100 people were on hand for the first presentations of the conference, including representatives from utilities including Hydro, Manitoba Hydro and B.C. Hydro. Their discussions are including all aspects of energy generation and transmission as well as environmental considerations and logistics relating to operations in remote communities.

"This is a forum for off grid utility members to interact and learn from each other," said Dave Hicks, Nalcor's manager of electrical engineering.

He is also chairman of this year's conference committee.

"It's an opportunity to share best practices regarding the management, design and operation of our off grid systems towards a safer, environmentally conscious, reliable, efficient and cost-effective operation."
