Premier says she has to continue to do what's right, even if it's not popular

Premier Kathy Dunderdale told reporters this morning that she is not surprised by the latest Corporate Research Associates poll numbers, showing a decline in satisfation with the provincial PC government.

She said it has been a tough few months, but her government has to continue to do what is right, not what is always popular.

Dunderdale said she's got to do what's best for the province, even it if isn't the most popular thing. She said that the month that CRA was polling was an especially tough time for government, with attacks coming from the public sector unions, and a looming budget deficit.

"We've had a major ad campaign anti-government going on for the past two months, we're in the middle of a budget where we know that cuts are coming. I'm not a bit surprised," she said. "I made a commitment to do what I believe is in the best interest of the people of the province and to run a principled government, and I can't make decisions to be popular."

Earlier story

Overall satisfaction with the performance of the Newfoundland PC government declined this quarter, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.

Less than half (45 per cent, down from 58 per cent three months ago) of residents are either completely or mostly satisfied with the performance of the PC government, according to the latest poll results.

Meanwhile,  more than half (52 per cent, up from 3 per cent) are dissatisfied with the performance of the current government, while three per cent didn't offer a definite opinion (compared with 4 per cent previously).

Four in 10 decided voters said they backed the PCs (38 per cent, down from 46 per cent in November 2012). Support for the NDP is at almost the same level as the PCs, 39 per cent, up from 31 per cent.

Support for the Liberals is stable at 22 per cent (compared with 23 per cent), while less than one percent said they prefer the Green Party (unchanged). One-quarter are undecided, do not plan to vote, or did not state a preference (26 per cent, compared with 27 per cent).

The full release on the poll results can be found HERE.

I hope in 2 and a 1/2 years from now she takes, Ms. Shea and Mr. Cornect with her. The two MHA's in this region have done nothing for the people they represent. It is so obvious that the cutting of 500 jobs was delayed til now, the plan was they couldnt do it just before an election, but do it just after an election so the Newfie voter will forget all about it in 2 and 1/2 years. I say good enough for the 500 workers who voted PC in the last election, don't feel sorry for them what so ever. You get what you vote for.

Kathy it's not a matter of popular decisions, attacks coming from the public sector unions, a looming budget deficit or a major anti-government ad campaign. The bottom line is that you and your "Government" are doing a horrible job and the people of this Province are getting tired of it.

The PC government is on their last legs but they will pull a surplus out of their hats the next two years. Don't be fooled by this and remember how arrogant and out of touch they were with the people who put them in there. Its time to get rid of this government before they do even more damage.

I agree that not all decisions should be made based on popularity. I would like it, however, if they were based on educated and open reasons that support the people of Newfoundland. The Dunderdale government might be good for non-local corporations and the Harper conservatives, but they've done next to nothing for the other 99% of Newfoundlanders.

She has to do what's right ? I guess appointing political hack Ross Reid with a 6 figure salary just had to be done, (at least before she started laying off 500 employees) Typical arrogance of "do as I say not do as I do" Nothing truer than "Tory times are hard times"

It's almost comical to listen to Dunderdale talk about principles, unless her principles are bullying, arrogance, and deceit. It's great to see the electorate can see her government for what it is.

She's not surprised at the numbers. I was surprised she didn't say numbers don't mean a thing. God, what a disaster for a premier. And there's Tom Marshall and Susan Sullivan behind her. Marshall infamous for his numbness of brain when presenting a budget, and Sullivan who sanctioned the poisioning of Sandy Pond, Missing from the trio is Jerome Kennedy. The four of 'em would make a fine pair. Indeed.

I agree with you both Glenn & Heddie.Dunderdale is out this next election for sure. Some people mad in NL these days. But the blinders will come off and she will be where she belongs out of a job just like she is doing with so many hard working people.See you on the streets.First the EI changes then put people out of work so they have to be put in a job of YOUR choice. She may be working in your local Timmies yet.

I wonder how the PC's will look at this poll. Some they look at, others they don't bother....Going to be interesting in 2015 to see the election spending start and how the doom and gloom turns into a huge boom.

Heddie you took the words right from my mouth. It puts me sick that we have to put up with this garbage. We elected these people to look out for the best interest of the people. "She said that the month that CRA was polling was an especially tough time for government, with attacks coming from the public sector unions, and a looming budget deficit." A tough time for GOVERNMENT? Are you serious? How about the people? Why is it I have two degrees and can't find a job to save my life ..what about the people working for years and getting layed off? ...please god let this province, and counrty for that matter, have sense enough to vote another way in 2015....We need some definite change in leadership. I don't even recognize this province any more.

People are always dissatisfied with Government when unpopular decisions are made, Nfld has a Liberal Party who still hasn't paid for their last campaign expenses and some people want them to run the economy of Nfld and some others want the No Brains Party(NDP) who would spend and spend and then tax and tax the people into puberty . The Government of Nfld today should stay the course and let the nay sayers whine like spoiled schools girls that they are.

What a one-two punch... The Premier sends 'em to the EI line, and Harper roughs 'em up once they get there. The attacks on the middle and working classes continue.... This current CON government in this province makes about as much sense as readin' a Scrabble board. A bunch of words but no clear message.

I always get a kick out of politicians. When polls are going their way, it's the best thing since sliced bread, but when they are not in their favour, well then it's only a "snapshot in time" and not really that important. Funny really !!!

Unfortunately the recent layoff of government employees will have little effect on the popularity of the government in power. The general public , for the most part consider government workers, provincial, municipal and federal as under-worked and overpaid. Therefore, unless the layoff directly affects a person directly it is considered a saving or elimination of a government employee position that is not needed. Sad but true.

Premier dunderdale is not a leader. She's a bully. She's tipped the tables and lead an otherwise not too far adrift team down the toilet. Too bad they like the rest of the nl public have to suffer her consequence.

When Kathy Dunderdale took over as premier from Danny Wiilliams, she inherited the biggest lead in the polls in NL history. Then she turned her back on Danny and cozied up with Stephen Harper. Now she's on a freefall and it wouldn't suprise me if the Liberals soon pass the PC's. I guess karma got you Kathy!

If Dunderdale had turned her back on ''Danny'', she would have scrapped his Muskrat Falls insanity, immediately ordered a complete program review of all government departments, thrown the political hack appointees out on their ear, and started using our finite non-renewable resource revenue responsibly. She didn't turn her back on him, she gave us more of the same. Turning her back on Him would have been the best thing that ever happened for our province.

I'm amazed at the percentage of those polled that are mostly or completely satisfied with the performance of this lame duck government. What's it going to take to dissatisfy them? A projected $10 billion deficit? NL has never been in more incompetent hands - ever, and that's saying something.
