Andrea Flowers, affectionately known as “Aunt Joy” and a well-known elder from Hopedale, was chosen the first-ever Inuit Woman of the Year by women who attended the Labrador Inuit Women’s Conference in Nain recently.
The conference was hosted by the Nunatsiavut Status of Women.
“On behalf of all beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement, I want to extend my sincere congratulations to Andrea,” says Nunatsiavut President Sarah Leo in a news release.
“As an active member of her community, she is a role model for women everywhere and is truly deserving of this award.”
Flowers serves as a chapel servant and is actively involved with the church. She is also a seamstress and is extremely skilled in making seal skin boots and other clothing, and spends much of her spare time and skills helping those less fortunate. Flowers openly shares her stories and wisdom with the people she meets and regularly helps out with clothing drives, school fairs and church auctions.
