Vince Withers laughed when The Telegram asked him if he’s going to be the next lieutenant-governor of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“If I am, I’m the last one to know about it,” he said.

Just after noon today, VOCM News sent out a breaking news alert saying that Withers was going to be the next Lieutenant Governor, replacing John Crosbie whose term expires this year.

“VOCM News has it on good authority that the province will soon have a new Lt. Governor. Vince Withers is the name being bandied about,” the news alert from VOCM said.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has a public photo opportunity at 3:15 p.m. this afternoon in Ottawa, and rumours started to circulate that it would be to announce Withers as the new lieutenant-governor.

Withers founded the Eating Disorders Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, and has been very active in the community.

When The Telegram reached him around 1:30 p.m., Withers said he’s got  other plans this afternoon.

"I have a meeting now and I’m giving a talk about twenty minutes from now, so unless somebody gets to me pretty quick, they’re going to have to pick somebody else."

Why don't you print all the comments that are sent you? I sent comments this afternoon but you refuse to make them available to the public and there was, in my opinion, nothing inappropriate or derogatory or insulting just the plain simple truth. I guess the truth hurts and you so called journalists / reporters simply are afraid of those uppy ups being appointed or afraid that they will not let you report other news stories while they are in office. Sounds hypocritical to me. Go ahead and print it.
