Power has been restored in the northern Labrador community of Nain following an outage that lasted approximately 10 hours.

By 8 p.m. Saturday, power was restored for the 450 Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro customers impacted by the outage, which was the result of an operating unit at the diesel plant experiencing a trip at 10 a.m. that same day.

Temporary repairs having been completed, but Hydro advised in a news release that a planned outage will be necessary to complete a permanent repair to one of the sensors in the operating unit.

A decision on when the outage will take place is due to be made on Monday, with weather conditions cited as a factor for the timing of further repairs.

Additional workers from Happy Valley-Goose Bay remained in Nain as of Sunday to handle repairs.

The diesel plant has been making use of only two of the three operating units since late-December due to engine failure. A new engine is ordered and scheduled to be operational by the middle of February.

Hydro is advising customers in the area to conserve energy as a precautionary measure to help lessen electricity generation demand.

An electrical trip effecting one of the generating units at the diesel generating station in Nain has created a power outage in the northern Labrador community.

The power outage was first reported at 10 a.m. Saturday, according to Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. A maintenance crew is on site to begin repairs, with additional workers on the way from Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Among those workers heading to Nain is a line crew that’s expected to sectionalize lines in order to restore power for some residents until repairs are completed on the generating unit.

The estimated end-point for the outage was 3 p.m. as of early Saturday afternoon.

The diesel plant in Nain is equipped with three generating units, but one of those units has been out of service since late December because of an engine failure. A new engine has been ordered and is scheduled to be operational by the middle of February, according to Hydro.
