Report concludes wind power not a least-cost option: Kennedy

Natural Resources Minister Jerome Kennedy and Nalcor CEO Ed Martin held a news conference today to make it clear that wind power does not make sense for Newfoundland and Labrador.

Kennedy released a report by Manitoba Hydro International (MHI) which found that relying on wind power would cost at least $3.4 billion more than Muskrat Falls.

Martin said that wind power was dismissed relatively early in their study of power options, but due to political criticism, the government ordered an independent study to take a second look.

Kennedy said MHI's analysis validates Nalcor, and serves to endorse the Muskrat Falls plan.

    Whomever pays for the study, gets to determine the findings and the outcomes.

    Wind and solar are inherently high-cost, low delivery options for power generation. Just ask Dalton McGuinty and the hundred of millions of dollars he sank trying to develop these sources of power. If you try to put any more that 10% of a power grid on wind power, brownouts will be a regular occurence. No thanks

    As any engineer worth their salt would tell you wind power is a very UNreliable option for power generation and would have to be backed up by a power plant and/or large scale battery facilities. Wind is very costly and unsightly to boot. I wouldn't let the masses let that get in the way of their uninformed opinions though. After moving home I've come to realize most NFLD'ers are just a bunch of blowhards with negative opinions on every subject under the sun. Another way to think about this is do you actually expect the population not to grow and other industries not to develop? Are you people that negative in your outlook and so beholden to your entitlements that you would hate to see something be built that would potentially reduce your entitlements, especially the public sector mooches. Germany pays 17 cents a kilowatt hour, has 80 million people and has an small solar and wind industry. Do you not think wind wouldn't drive up your power costs as well? You're all delusional. Kathy Dunderdale should have said she wasn't going to build Muskrat Falls and then you would be all for it.

    To those who think wind is great I say set up a windmill behind your house and disconnect from the grid. Then you won't have to worry about paying for any electricity...of course you will not have any electricity when the wind stops blowing, or when the wind is blowing to hard, but hey who cares right?

      that is what a battery bank is for, the more batteries, the longer you have power. i feel you need to educate yourself to avoid looking like a fool here.

    Reading the negativity in these blogs is getting monumentally tiring. It makes one wonder whether the authors of much of this tripe are motivated by potential political gains. To Jack ... it's not the wind that costs money no more than the water flowing over Muskrat Falls. It's the hundreds (or more) of turbines that you'd have to construct to equate to the power supplied by Muskrat Falls. In fact you'd probably have to carpet the Long Range Mountains with turbines! Wouldn't that be a nice tourist attraction!

    Why don't they just do one report that comes to the conclusion that Newfoundland will simply sink into the ocean and we'll all drown if we do anything other than build Muskrat Falls? It would save us a few bucks, and gawd knows we'll need every dime when we're verging on bankruptcy.

    For a former Lawyer/Prosecutor, Jerome Kennedy is not too bright as he thinks wind power is more expensive than water when this province has definitely harness this resource from the Wreckhouse or anywhere along the Long Range Mountains.

      I thought Kednnedy had some real moxie when he "lectured" judge Hughes about government appointed judges. (Hello!). He caved-in when the Law Society told him to shut up or he was on the bus to a check-out clerk job at the drug store.
