After leading Newfoundland’s Mi’kmaq people through the process that created the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band, the membership has finally asked Brendan Sheppard to be its first properly elected leader.

Sheppard, who was the leader of the Federation of Newfoundland Indians, was declared the winner by TC Media after seven polls late Tuesday.

Sheppard had a commanding lead of 815 vote to Odelle Pike’s 341. Calvin Francis was the third most popular choice with 21 votes.

The counting of regular polls, advanced polls and mail-in ballots went well into the night with few official final results known before press deadline.
