Environment and Conservation minister Tom Hedderson has announced several events related to the province's Environmental Protection Act.
Six projects have been released from further environmental assessment.
They are:
• Bird Cove- St. Margaret's Bay hiking and ATV trails, proposed by the Town of Bird Cove and St. Barbe Development Association;
• Pouch Cove quarry extension, proposed by GWK Holdings Inc.;
• Spruce Brook raspberry farm, proposed by Spruce Brook Farms Ltd. (The minister said this project will not proceed because the Department of Environment and Conservation will not issue a permit to use the T’Railway Provincial Park as an access to the proposed site);
• IOC explosives facility project, proposed by the Iron Ore Co. of Canada, is released subject to conditions;
• Aspen Brook sand and gravel quarry expansion, proposed by Hunt's Concrete Ltd., is released subject to conditions;
• District 7 Crown five-year Operating Plan (2013-2017), proposed by the Department of Natural Resources is released subject to conditions.
EPR required
The minister has determined that an environmental preview report is required for the proposed Fire Lake North Railway by Champion Minerals Inc., between Labrador west and Quebec, to address additional information requirements related to possible socio-economic effects
An environmental assessment committee will be appointed to provide advice to the minister on guidelines for the proponent on the preparation of the report.
Amendments to Alderon EIS
Meanwhile, Alderon Iron Ore Corp. has advised that clarifications and corrections should be made in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for its proposed Kami Iron Ore Project in Labrador.
