Eight Canada Post locations in rural Newfoundland are no longer open on Saturdays.

The eight post offices impacted are in Belleoram, Cape Broyle, Carmanville, Englee, English Harbour West, New Harbour, Port au Port, and Sunnyside.

Canada Post spokeswoman Anick Losier said the crown corporation is facing challenges due to more people communicating online. She said this has led to a decrease in traditional mail volumes, less stamp purchases, and fewer visits to post offices.

Compared to 2011, Losier said Canada Post is handling three million fewer pieces of mail per day.

“As an organization that operates solely on the revenue generated by our products and services, we need to look at our costs,” she wrote in an e-mail to The Telegram.

According to Losier, most affected communities were informed about the changes in July, with most Saturday closures coming into effect last month. She said Canada Post is continuing to review its “entire network to find efficiencies, not just Newfoundland and Labrador.”

There are over 200 post offices provincewide, according to Canada Post.

I just wanna say that i think the one in englee should be kept open. i know my grand parents have no sweet clue how to email, or communicate online. And the nearest franchise store that may send out parcels is in Roddicton, which for them is a long drive. i think the only reason why the mail has deminished there is because there are so little people. but they cant help it, people move away and now all thats there are senior citizens.. most of which are computer illiterate.

Sure people use the internet more than using the mail for corresponding, but what about parcels? Last time I checked, you can't use the internet for that. What about people that work during the week? They can't always get to the Post Office during their working hours. At least they could mail parcels on Saturdays if the service was available. Postal plants operate seven days a week and the parcels would probably get delivered sooner if they didn't have to wait until a Monday to be mailed. I know, Canada Post will say, you can go to a franchise store to mail it, but it's just another way of taking work away from unionized workers.

but of course i cant wait to hear from your liberal/ndp members of parliment. they will probably blame the conservatives for it, but in fact it was liberal governments under paul martin, and jean chretian that started the cuts too canada post, they also started the super mail boxes. but in todays computer age. we really dont need the post office to do buisness or to send mail, with a click of a mouse a meassage cant be send within a minute.

This is no news to the people of Port aux Basques. Our Post Office haven't been open on saturdays for more years than I can remember. It seems to work out OK and we have access to the lobby if we have a key which you can get from the Post Office for a fee.
